Seines

There are as many designs and variations of seines as there are variations and habitats of fish. Sterling provides over 50 years of experience in building seines to meet the needs of commercial, research and recreational users. Top quality nylon netting and materials are used throughout. Standard configurations are shown below. Please contact us for any special requirements.

Knotted Nylon Seines

These nets are hand hung by our skilled Down East Maine net men. Standard Construction:
Full one third basis netting (150 stretched feet per 100 feet of seine).
Single top and double bottom lines of 5/16" diameter braided polypropylene to resist kinking and untwisting and to keep seines from rolling up.
Rot proof, sponge type floats placed every 30" to 36" (at nearest tie).
Lead sinkers are placed every 10" to 16" (at nearest tie).

Less than 20' lengths add $5.00 per seine.

Knotless Nylon Seines

Knotless netting, for the same break test as knotted, uses less weight for the same size net. Therefore, it is less expensive than a knotted net. Also, with no knots, the fish are not scaled or stressed when they are caught. Float and lead rigging is the same as our knotted seines.

Special Construction Seines
In addition to the small mesh and drag seines described above, Sterling can supply other types of seines that are specifically designed to catch individual species or to take advantage of the sea bed by encircling or trapping fish. The variations in design and cost are extremely diverse. For a price quote or assistance in designing your net, please contact Sterling with your requirements.
  Purse Seines

A floating net that surrounds the schooling fish and is deeper than the schooling depth. Once the school is encircled, the bottom of the net is closed or pursed. These nets are generally used in deep waters, but are occasionally used in shallow water where the bottom is not favorable to dragging the seine. Sterling Purse Seines are of two general configurations, shown below.

Haul or Beach Seine with Pocket

haul seine picture This is an encircling seine and consists of two wings and a pocket. The pocket may be centered or offset to one side depending on how the net will be hauled. Many times the wings will have variable mesh size, larger and lighter twines on the outer and smaller and heavier towards the pocket.
  Long Seine Without Pocket

This seine is larger than a beach seine and is usually operated from two boats and dragged. long seine picture
  Stop Seine or Stop Net

(Not pictured) - This net is set across the mouth of a small bay, bayou, beach or other restricted area of water and the fish are trapped between the net and the land. The fish are landed by either waiting for the ebb tide and then dipping or hauling them out or allowing them to escape over the stop seine float line by dipping the float line into a floating holding box or pocket.
