Sterling's
Trawls can be designed for bottom, midwater and surface
fishing, dependent upon the species of fish or fish
environment. Sterling
has been building trawls for years and has extensive
knowledge in their design and construction.
Some
of our most popular constructions are shown below. For
special designs, contact us with your specifications
and we will be pleased to quote and assist you in design.

Biological
Sampling Midwater Trawl
|
|
|
| |
  |
|
| |
Sterling
has developed a line of stock size MIDWATER TRAWLS FOR
SAMPLING purposes. These trawls are constructed with
varying size mesh panels that range in size from 4"
sq. mesh to 1/2" sq. mesh. Standard trawls are available
with front openings measuring 10', 8' or 6' square and are
attached to an aluminum front frame to assure positive net
opening. Depth is controlled by speed, bridle length, distance
from float line to surface and distance of surface float
to boat stern.
SURFACE OR FLOATING TRAWL - The
midwater trawl can be converted to a
surface trawl by the easy addition of floats to the trawl
top. Inquire stating your requirements for a price quote.

Semi-Balloon
Otter Trawl - 4 Seam with Gussets
|
|
|
| |
| Sterling's
Biological Sampling Otter Trawl is the most efficient
trawl for bottom sampling, The design is four-seam with
higher opening gussets that allow for maximum height
and sampling area. The head rope precedes the bottom
chain rope by approximately 45 degrees. When the bottom
chain pressure causes the fish to rise, the head rope
has already preceded and the fish are entrapped. Small
boat sampling has been successfully accomplished using
a 16' Boston Whaler and a 25 h.p. engine. |
 |
|
|
| |
| The
trawl has a No.9 1 1/2" stretched mesh body and
a No.15 1 1/4" stretched mesh cod end. Complete
with doors, hardware and bridle. 1/4" mesh liners
are available. Trawls are usually treated black. Liners,
knotless netting or plankton micron mesh are untreated
to prevent fish abrasion and stress. |

Sterling's
sport trawl is designed for recreational trawling. It
is constructed with 1 1/2" stretched mesh throughout
and has a 16' head rope. Complete with floats, leads
and doors with 2" steel runners and a 125' towing
bridle. |

Small
Boat Grass Shrimp Trawls |
|
|
| |
 |
These
shrimp and grass shrimp trawls can be used behind small
boats, off bridges or across tidal streams during tide
changes. When used from a boat, attach rope at all four
corners and tow behind boat or off side boom. For deeper
water leads can be added to the bottom of the frame.

Standard
Construction - Frame size 4' x 2', 2" PVC pipe and elbows
at 4 corners. Mesh netting 5/16" Atlas. Custom sizes
available. |

A
tickle chain is attached to the front of the trawl when
fishing for flounder or crabs or when shrimp are moving
along the bottom. The tickle chain gets the shrimp up
so the trawl does not pass over them. Tickle chains
are equipped with two shackles. |

These
trawl boards are made of the best materials and finest
Alabama workmanship. Do not confuse these with lightweight
substitutes that are easily destroyed. |

Optional
Features for Trawls
|
|
|
| |
|
|
| |
Trawls
have many optional features depending upon the type of trawl
and the area to be fished. Some variations are listed below.
Inquire for pricing. |
|
| |
LENGTHENING
PIECE (International Body) - Used on larger trawls to
balance flow through. Call for quote. |
|
| |
MUD
ROLLERS - Recommended for larger trawls to prevent snagging
on bottom. Call for quote |
|
| |
CHAFING
GEAR -
Heavy duty additional net attached around cod end to reduce
wear on cod end. Call for quote |
|
| |
FLOTATION
- Deep sea trawling requires pressure resistant floats. |
|
| |
NET
GUARD TREATMENT - This is an acrylic-based plastic that
bonds net fibers, stiffens the net and increase the life
of the net. Add $1.50 per ft. of head rope.
|
|
| |
BRIDLE
AND TOWLINE LENGTH - Bridle length is the distance from
swivel to boat. |
|
| |
Cod
End Liners for Biological Sampling Trawls. Small mesh
liners or plankton micron mesh are inserted inside cod end
to contain collected samples. Call for quote. |
